Scuba diving with fur seals in Narooma NSW

Narooma served up one of those unforgettable underwater experiences that stays with you long after you’ve dried off and packed away your gear. During a scuba dive off the NSW South Coast, we had the incredible opportunity to spend time in the water with a group of wild fur seals — and they were every bit as playful as people say.

Not long into the dive, the seals began darting around us, weaving in and out with curiosity and confidence. They moved with effortless speed and grace, twisting, rolling, and zooming past as if they were putting on a private show. Unlike anything you experience on land, diving with seals feels genuinely interactive — they come close, they watch you, and they seem to enjoy the interaction just as much as we do.

We spent a good 40 minutes in the water, sharing the space not only with the seals but also with the rich marine life that Narooma is known for. Between the movement of the seals, the schools of fish, and the overall colour and activity beneath the surface, it was an experience that felt exciting, peaceful, and completely immersive all at once.

I captured some of the magic on my GoPro, and it perfectly reflects what makes Narooma such a special dive destination — not just the scenery, but the chance to connect with wildlife in a way that feels wild, natural, and completely unforgettable.
